77th IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference

Fri, 13 September, 2024

Held from 7 to 12 July 2024, the International Institute of Welding’s 77th Annual Assembly and International Conference was a roaring success with over 1000 attendees from across the globe. Hosted by the Greek Welding Society on the beautiful island of Rhodes, the beauty of the location was only matched by the technical quality of the speakers and the delivery of the event by its magnanimous hosts.

With the meeting of 18 Commissions, who focus on everything from “Arc Welding and Filler Metals” to Microjoining and Nanojoining” to “Quality Management in Welding and Allied Processes”, these important activities are imperative to the continuous advancement and innovation in welding and its allied processes. The output and deliverables from these Commissions feed directly into and support industry via the creation of ISO Standards, as well as best practices.

However, this event is not only for the Commissions, it’s also provides an opportunity for the International Authorisation Board (IAB) meetings, Group A, B and the Members Meeting, to meet to discuss the management and delivery of the various qualifications and certifications offered by IIW; most notably, the Welding Coordinator Diploma, the Personnel Certification Scheme (PCS) and the ISO 3834 – Certification of Manufacturers Scheme.

TWI Certification Ltd (TWI CL) was delighted to be represented at the event by three of its team members – the Heads of Certification, Emma Freckingham (Company Certification) and Clare McGrath (Personnel Certification), and its Quality Manager, Laura Daly. TWI CL holds the unique position as the UK Authorised Nominated Body (ANB) and Authorised Nominated Body for Company Certification (ANBCC), and this attends the IAB meetings to ensure that the qualifications and certifications that TWI CL is responsible for providing in the UK remain compliant with IIW requirements and continue to meet the needs of industry globally. .

As well as this, we are delighted to announce that Emma Freckingham, (then) Vice Chair of Sub-Committee C in Commission XVIII (Quality Management in Welding and Allied Processes) was voted as the new Chair of Sub-Committee C: Quality Management Standards. We wish Emma the warmest congratulations and look forward to Emma (and TWI CL) contributing even more to the engineering industry going forwards.
