Martyn Wright - Giving back to industry through volunteering

Mon, 28 October, 2024

After having a long association with TWI Certification Ltd (TWI Cert), Martyn Wright feels that his volunteer role on the Certification Management Board (CMB) for TWI Cert gives him a sense of ‘giving something back’ after his many years engaged within the industry.

Having started his career as a laboratory technician, Martyn soon got involved in NDT when a friend introduced him to the ‘interesting world of inspection and testing, exciting travel, and professional qualifications’ beyond that of his academic qualifications. He worked as an NDT technician for a few years, during which time he undertook his first external NDT exam for Radiographic Inspection – and thus he became a CSWIP Radiographic Inspector. Certification in other NDT methods quickly followed, together with a CSWIP Welding Inspector certification. With this myriad of certifications achieved, Martyn was able to progress his career and gain experience in a variety of jobs throughout the offshore industry. Martyn’s experience and certifications even provided him with the opportunity to move to Perth, Western Australia for 3 years.

Returning to the UK in the early 2000’s, Martyn worked at TWI Ltd for several years in different areas of the business ranging from technical specific, such as NDT, to training as well as examinations.

Martyn now works for Lloyd’s Register (LR) where he has had a few different roles, including Principal NDT Specialist for LR Marine division, then later transferring to the Technical Directorate and Governance section within LR, which is where he is now.

As well as his full time position, Martyn also sits on the Certification Management Board (CMB) for TWI Cert as a volunteer, where he has the opportunity to review the activities of all other committees, and TWI Cert business as a whole. He has the opportunity to provide comments and actions that shape, influence, and govern the whole governance process. He feels that his knowledge and experience from being deeply involved in technical detail within his day-to-day work, coupled with his certification and examination knowledge of CSWIP schemes, enables him to have a valued input into the governance of TWI Cert.

“Personally, I feel honoured to be given this trust, and in turn I regard all of my input activities as important and valued.” – Martyn Wright.

Martyn’s employer, Lloyds Register, is happy that he is represented on TWI Cert’s Certification Management Board, and fully supports the value that he can provide in his efforts and input. They feel it is important that their company has appropriate and meaningful representation which adds to their heritage and history within industry, and volunteering for TWI Cert plays an important part in fulfilling these aims.

As well as his role at Lloyds Register and his place on our TWI Cert Certification Management Board, Martyn also represents Lloyds Register on an external NDT research body, as well as for British Standards. For Martyn “independent certifications (such as CSWIP) have [not only] added value and potential opportunities throughout [his] career”, but also enable him to speak with a recognised degree of knowledge and influence on these Boards and Committees.

When it comes to the next steps in his career, Martyn is happy continuing in his present role and volunteering with TWI Cert, and will maintain his CSWIP Level 3 certifications. The variety in his work, coupled with occasional travel, client visits, conferences and symposiums keep his role interesting.

When he isn’t busy working or volunteering, Martyn loves to relax and unwind by reading a book or taking a walk on the beach.

We are very appreciative of Martyn’s volunteering efforts for TWI Certification Ltd. Further information on the certifications mentioned above can be found on our website.
