Lawrence Barboza, Principal Welding Engineer (responsible Welding Coordinator) at NIS Limited, became TWI Cert’s second submission in a row to win the EWF Best European Welding Coordinator.
Presented at EWF’s Annual General Assembly held in Lisbon in October 2024, the award is a testament to an individual’s ability to deliver the responsibilities of a Welding Coordinator to the highest regard in accordance with ISO 3834.
The award is available to individuals who:
- hold the European Welding Engineer Diploma
- have been working as a responsible welding coordinator (rWC) for a minimum of 12 months,
- at an organisation that has been certified by an EWF member.
This award is a means for individuals, and their company, to showcase their knowledge, skills, and competence to deliver products and services according to international requirements.
As the only Authorised Nominated Body for Company Certification (ANBCC) in the UK, TWI Certification Ltd (TWI CL) is asked each year by EWF, the European Federation for Welding, Joining, and Cutting, for its nominations for the award. Nominations require the submission of a letter by the employer detailing the competence and contribution of their employee, and a statement from the employee expressing how their Diploma (and their Certified EWE (CEWE) status, if held) has aided in their competence and career achievements.
Lawrence took charge of NIS’ welding engineering department back in 2019. His appointment was quickly followed by the successful completion of his responsible Welding Coordinator (rWC) interview with TWI Cert, within which his technical knowledge was graded at the Comprehensive Level, as per the requirements of ISO 14731. Since this award, Lawrence has gone on to be NIS’ Lead auditor and solely responsible for ensuring their compliance with their ISO 3834-2 and EN 1090-1 certification.
Along with his team, Lawrence has contributed significantly to improving the welding processes at NIS, from the weld itself to the consumables used. By introducing comprehensive audits of the system and its components, he has increased understanding and the importance of training, as well as compliance with health and safety requirements. However, the benefits do not end there, these changes have also resulted in reduced failure rates during production, minimised non-conformances, reduced repair rates, and so much more.
Lawrence’s contributions do not end with NIS business processes, he is also quick to support his fellow colleagues. He has done so by aiding one to achieve a professional qualification – Incorporated Engineer (IEng) - and two others in gaining Specific grade during their own rWC interviews.
We wish Lawrence our sincerest congratulations on his achievement and best wishes for the future.
