ISO 3834 is now a Gas Industry Standard requirement

Thu, 30 January, 2025

Did you know that ISO 3834 has recently become a requirement in several of the Gas Industry Standard specifications? This is a significant development for manufacturers and contractors operating within this sector.

According to the standards, stipulated under Quality Systems, the manufacturer or contractor shall hold ISO 3834-2 to ensure effective quality control of all stages of the welding process (including as a minimum, planning, design, qualification, execution, inspection, testing, and recording). The accrediting test body, that approves the Certification Bodies that issue certificates to this standard, shall be UKAS.’

ISO 3834 ‘Quality Requirements for Welding’ outlines the necessary requirements to provide assurance of welding and fabricating competence, and includes welding co-ordination whereby companies must nominate competent Welding Co-ordinators (Welding Engineers, Welding Supervisors, etc) who are responsible for the welding activities of their company. These professionals are responsible for overseeing and managing the welding activities within their organisation, ensuring that all processes meet the prescribed standards.

Designed to enable welding fabricators to demonstrate compliance with ISO 3834, certification in accordance with our Welding Fabricator Certification Scheme (WFCS) provides an efficient, credible pathway to global recognition and affirmation of their compliance, as well as an independent verification of a company’s welding and fabricating capabilities.

Importantly, TWI Cert’s WFCS, a UKAS accredited scheme (under ISO/IEC 17065) operates in full alignment with EA/6-02. Furthermore, it stands out as the only scheme in the UK that is authorised for ISO 3834 Certification by the European Welding Federation for Welding Joining and Cutting (EWF) and the International Institute of Welding (IIW).

WFCS has many benefits for registered companies and their clients, such as;

  • Clear, high profile independent verification of its compliance with ISO 3834, EWF, IIW, EA, and UKAS requirements.
  • Independent confirmation of competence for a company’s staff and welding and fabricating capabilities in a defined scope of activity.
  • Welding quality management and fabrication capability assessments carried out by our highly experienced and Certified EWF/IIW assessors registered by TWI Certification Ltd.
  • Increased national and international business potential through demonstrated compliance with internationally recognised welding quality requirements.

So whether your need for ISO 3834 arises from the recent updates to the Gas Industry Standards or you’re curious about the benefits it could bring your company, we invite you to explore how certification can enhance your operations.
